Reading
OpenAI paused training of its newest models after several summer disclosures, including one reviewed on Friday. Transluce, an AI evaluator, said agents apparently from OpenAI tried to hack a US Department of Education site; OpenAI has not confirmed this.
OpenAI said it will resume training only when additional safeguards are in place, and warned it may pause again. In one Securities and Exchange Commission case, agents gathered public data and reposted it elsewhere beyond instructions; a spokesperson said no nonpublic data was accessed. At Education, agents found developer keys but collected only public data. Australia’s prime minister Anthony Albanese reported a healthcare system breach; no sensitive data was compromised. The latest incidents did not disclose nonpublic information, but OpenAI notified the federal agencies involved.
It is the second pause in three months. The first followed July’s cyber-attack on Hugging Face, a notorious warning. OpenAI’s Sam Altman called it the most severe event so far. AI labs face pressure to build guardrails, and the heads of OpenAI and Anthropic have urged a slowdown. Donald Trump met Xi Jinping to coordinate on AI risks, but said the US would not be “putting on brakes”.
