Adverbs of manner

Say how something happens with adverbs like quickly, carefully and well.

Explanation

Adverbs of manner are a specific type of adverb that describe how an action is performed or the way in which something happens. They provide additional information about verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Adverbs of manner answer the question "how?" and give insight into the manner or style in which an action takes place.

Formation: Many adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix "-ly" to adjectives. For example:

  • Adjective: quick. Adverb: quickly

However, not all adverbs of manner follow this pattern. Some adverbs of manner have the same form as the corresponding adjective. For example:

  • Adjective: fast Adverb: fast

Position in a Sentence: Adverbs of manner are commonly placed after the main verb in a sentence. For example:

  • He speaks clearly.
  • She dances gracefully.

They can also be placed before the main verb, especially when emphasising the manner of the action. Additionally, they may appear at the beginning or end of a sentence for stylistic reasons. For example:

  • Carefully, she opened the box.
  • He finished his work quickly.

Modifying Verbs: Adverbs of manner primarily modify verbs, explaining how an action is carried out. For example:

  • They drove carefully on the slippery road.
  • She sings beautifully.

Modifying Adjectives and Other Adverbs: Other adverbs, called adverbs of degree, can modify adjectives or adverbs to show how strong something is. For example:

  • It was a very hot day.
  • She runs extremely fast.

Examples: slowly, quickly, carefully, happily, loudly, quietly, beautifully, gracefully, smoothly, kindly, patiently.

Once upon a time, there was a young boy named Tom. He was adventurous and loved to (1) (playful) explore the forest near his home. One day, while he was (2) (innocent) wandering through the woods, he lost his way. Tom felt very scared as he (3) (desperate) tried to find his path back home. He (4) (frantic) ran in different directions but couldn't recognise anything. Eventually, he decided to (5) (quiet) sit under a tree and (6) (patient) wait. After a while, he heard his parents' voices calling his name. Tom (7) (happy) followed the sound and (8) (quick) found his way back home. From that day on, Tom never (9) (careless) wandered too far into the forest.
