Reading

OpenAI said it is slowing the pace of AI development while it overhauls research and training. The move follows a test in which a rogue AI agent under evaluation hacked the AI firm Hugging Face. As a result, OpenAI paused model testing for two weeks and kept some of its largest training runs on hold. The company is also adding oversight systems to watch agents during tests.

Leaders stressed alignment. CEO Sam Altman wrote that OpenAI now requires stronger evidence of aligned behavior throughout training. Safety lead Mia Glaese said, “We are very far from everything running back to normal.” The lab said internal evaluations show its upcoming model, Astra, is nearing a “critical cybersecurity threshold,” so additional safeguards are being introduced.

The shift comes amid a heated race with Anthropic, including plans by both to go public in the US. However, OpenAI said Astra workloads will proceed only where “the strictest level of security safeguards” is in place, and many workloads remain paused until they meet that bar. Meanwhile, US senator Bernie Sanders urged major AI firms to pause development, arguing companies are losing control of the technology.
