Reading
Google will spend €13bn in Finland to build AI infrastructure. The plan includes three new data centres in Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala, and it will expand Google’s existing site in Hamina. The company says the project will support more than 37,000 jobs during construction and add €3.6bn a year to Finland’s economy. Work is set for 2027 and 2028. As part of the investment, Google signed a 22-year contract with Fortum. It may buy up to 50% of the output from the Loviisa nuclear power plant. Finland is attractive because of its cool climate and clean energy. The data centres will help run services such as the Gemini AI, Search, Maps and YouTube. The package also includes clean energy projects and funds for biodiversity, education, research and local workers.
