The story

The River Rhine has fallen to record low levels in parts of Germany and the Netherlands after prolonged heatwaves. The drought is affecting transport, industry and farmers across several countries as rivers drop to unusual lows.

In late July, Germany's Low Water Information System reported that 44% of Rhine measuring stations and 78% of Danube stations showed extremely low water levels. At the Kaub chokepoint the navigable depth hit around 25 cm, restricting how heavily ships can be loaded. The Rhine is a busy waterway for shipping. Precautions would have to be taken, such as spreading out cargo among more vessels to make them less heavy.

Low flows on the Danube also caused major problems. Hungary's only nuclear power plant is operating at reduced capacity and is on the brink of shutting down. Officials said the power plant may need to be taken offline if water levels fall further. Serbia reduced output at some coal plants and Romania carried out a controlled explosion to increase water flow to its nuclear plant. Two car plants in Romania agreed to halt production to reduce electricity use.

Italy's Po reached historic lows, pushing saltwater into the river and disrupting irrigation for farmers. Scientists say human-caused climate change is raising evaporation and making droughts more likely. Renewed heatwave conditions are expected to continue, increasing demand for water for homes, farms and industry.
