Nasa's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday morning, beginning a 100-day trip to a vantage point about one million miles from Earth. Roughly 30 minutes after lift-off, the spacecraft separated from a SpaceX Falcon Heavy and set course for its orbit.
Roman will make panoramic surveys with a field of view about 100 times larger than Hubble and James Webb. It will map billions of galaxies and help test ideas about dark energy and dark matter — a gravitational glue and a force linked to the Universe's expansion.
The mission also targets exoplanets. Nasa expects tens of thousands of finds and hopes some may be potentially habitable. Astronomers say the telescope will work far from Earth, roughly four times farther than the Moon, so infrared light from Earth and the Moon will not affect its cameras.
The observatory has a five-year primary life, with a goal of ten years. It honours Nancy Grace Roman, Nasa's first chief astronomer.
